課程目標 |
The first three weeks of class, I will give three lectures to introduce the basic facts concerning India and its economy. PowerPoint presentations for all lectures (including lectures during the first three weeks) will be posted before class at:

There are some names and terms you should know and the third week (9/28) I will give a short quiz worth 5% of your grade to encourage you to learn these names and terms. We will also form groups to prepare for group presentations which will be made on 10/19 and 11/2. On 10/5, we will watch a light comedy, Outsourced, which deals with India’s international trade in services. On 10/12, During the first half of the class, I will present material on the effects of the present economic crisis on India & then we will discuss recent Indian news stories based on news articles you bring to class (5% of your grade). The second half of the class will be for group presentation preparation. On 10/19, you will give short group presentations concerning important Indian corporations and business groups based on material in Kumar’s India’s Global Powerhouses and information on the internet (20% of your grade). The following week (10/26) I will present material on urban poverty in India based largely on Menon-Sen and Bhan’s Swept Off the Map. The second half of class will be devoted to group presentation preparation. On 11/2, your groups will do short presentations based on material from the India Together website. This is an advocacy journalism site which focuses on the social and economic problems facing India. These group presentations will also be worth 20% of your grade. I hope by this time, you will have gained a basic overview of India.
The rest of the course (and the remaining 50% of your grade) will be DIO: Do It Ourselves. On 11/2, we will discuss how you want to organize the rest of the class and how you want to be graded. We will take a survey of the class to see what topics you most want to investigate and I will explain where materials related to these topics exist. In the past, we have mainly used group projects and debates. I can also give lectures, but the Indian economy is not my field of expertise. I began teaching this topic a couple years ago because I wanted to learn about it myself and I expect to spend the semester reading papers on the Indian economy so that I can keep up with you. |
